Acer rubrum. Zones 3-9. Fast growing, commonly reaches 75-80 feet tall, can grow more than 100 feet in ideal conditions. This is one of the most common and widespread deciduous trees of eastern North American and is adapted to a very wide range of soil conditions. Tolerates wet soil better than most. Autumn Foliage varies from greenish yellow to vibrant scarlet to burgundy and often one of the first trees to color. Used as a shade tree. It is used commercially on a small scale for maple syrup production as well as for its medium to high quality lumber. The twigs of the red maple are reddish in color. Food source for white-tailed deer, for which the tree is an important source of winter food.
